Motor Banking Pods to the Underworld

While traipsing about this spooky, Long Island, I have previously written about compelling bank architecture AND references to the occult along Olde Cüntreigh Rhoad. Today’s spookyposting update features both!

These modernist structures caught my eye the first time I arrived in this unusually-espooky district of Nassau County (which is simultaneously in Westbury, Carle Place, Garden City, Uniondale, and probably Mineola, too.)

The commercial development at #600 O-C-R was constructed in 1958, but I’ve struggled to find any online references to its architect. The detached pods somewhat resemble the observation towers at the New York State Pavilion in Flushing Meadows. (From “Men in Black”) Those were erected in 1963.

When you observe the curved structures next to the larger office building, it is obvious they were built to facilitate a drive-thru operation. A cursory search suggests this was once a Citibank branch – possibly as late as 2014 – until they moved across Clinton Road into a nondescript box shared with Ye Olde Vitamine Shoppe at #502.

I recently caught a glimpse of the back side of the largest “pod,” facing the mall/away from the street. I was surprised to discover it houses a freight elevator, possibly servicing a subterranean loading dock for the main office building. Alternatively, this may be a gate to the netherworld – kindly be advised: no pallet jacks are allowed in Dante’s Inferno.
